STARTING OUT WITH SOLIDS
NOW THE FUN BEGINS!
Start with one food at a time, for 2-3 days. Once baby has tried an array of foods, you can start to blend foods.
You may only get 1 teaspoon in to start with, this is ok as this will gradually build up.
Steam the vegetable or fruit with filtered water. Great first foods to cook include sweet potato, butternut squash, zucchini, pears, peaches and apple.
Transfer the cooked vegetable or fruit into a bowl (for hand blending or mashing) or the machine you will use to puree.
Blend or mash until smooth
The steaming liquid can be added to make the puree (avoid using the water from green beans, carrots, squash, spinach, and beetroot as they leech nitrates).
You can also use breast milk (recommended for the first few feedings as this will provide a familiar taste), formula or filtered water.
Freeze in a silicone ice cube tray until needed
THE FIRST WEEKS OF SOLIDS
Only serve soft, pureed fruits and vegetables
Serve single ingredients only and at a space of 2/3 days apart with introducing each new food
Try new foods in the morning or lunch (not before a big sleep), so you can watch out for reactions
Keep a diary of foods your baby has eaten, making note of any reactions etc.
